Wall Preparation for Painting in Bellville and the Northern Suburbs

How-To Guide

Preparation is eighty percent of any successful paint job. In the Northern Suburbs climate, any weakness in surface preparation will be exposed and accelerated by the harsh conditions Bellville homes endure.

Step 1: Clean the Surface

Bellville exterior walls accumulate significant dust and grime. A high-pressure wash is essential before any exterior repaint. Allow at least 48 hours to dry. Interior walls need a thorough wash with sugar soap to remove grease. Never paint over a dirty surface.

Step 2: Remove Loose Paint

Any peeling, flaking or poorly adhered paint must be removed before repainting. Use a scraper, wire brush or electric sander. Do not paint over loose paint — the failure will continue regardless of the topcoat quality.

Step 3: Repair All Cracks and Prime

Thermal cycling in Bellville causes more cracking than in milder climates. Fill all cracks with flexible acrylic filler. Apply the correct primer for the surface type. Priming is not optional. See our full Bellville home painting guide for seasonal application advice.

Bellville Painters never skips preparation. Every job is properly cleaned, repaired and primed before topcoat is applied.
